TURP SET
A TURP set refers to a collection of surgical instruments and devices used for Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP). This surgical procedure is performed to treat complications caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). As the name implies, the procedure is carried out by visualizing and accessing the prostate through the urinary (urethral) tract, during which part of the prostate tissue is removed using electrocautery or surgical cutting techniques.
TURP is generally considered the most effective treatment for BPH and is performed under spinal anesthesia or general anesthesia. After the procedure, a urinary catheter is temporarily placed in the urethra to ensure urine flow and allow bladder drainage. The outcomes of this surgery are rated as excellent in 80–90% of BPH patients.
This procedure can be performed using either monopolar or bipolar techniques, and each method requires its own dedicated TURP instrument set.
Main Components of the TURP Set:
- Resectoscope: A thin, long tube inserted through the urethra into the bladder, used to visualize and remove prostate tissue.
- Electrode: A metal instrument used to cut and cauterize prostate tissue by means of electrical current.
- Accessories: Including tubing, catheters, drainage tubes, and other items used for irrigation, tissue collection, and guiding urine flow during the procedure.
