PCNL SET
If a patient’s kidney forms stones, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is first used to break up the stones so they can pass naturally. If stones remain in the kidney after this procedure or cause urinary obstruction to the ureter and bladder, PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy), also known as minimally invasive kidney stone surgery through a small skin incision, is performed.
In this surgery, the surgeon makes a very small incision in the patient’s back to extract kidney stones. After inserting the nephroscope lens and nephroscopy sheath, a hollow tube (catheter) is introduced through the incision into the kidney. A special lithotripsy tube is then passed through this catheter to break the stones, which are subsequently removed from the kidney using a specialized forceps through the same tube. This procedure can be performed under general, local, or spinal anesthesia.
